Prior to 7 weeks some abortions are able to be performed chemically (see section on Morning After Pill and RU486).
VACUUM OR SUCTION ASPIRATION is by far the most common method in Australia for first trimester abortions. The procedure is performed using one of the following anaesthetics:
A local anaesthetic where the woman is awake but given an injection into the cervix to deaden the pain and discomfort.
A local anaesthetic and an intravenous sedation using Valium and Pethidine (or similar drugs). This heavy sedation relaxes the woman and provides pain relief.
A general anaesthetic where the woman is unconscious during the procedure.
